In the News: Drought Could be Nightmare for Nature

Executive Director Christina Swanson was recently quoted in the San Diego Union Tribune, "Drought could be nightmare for nature: Outlook worsens for wetlands, foraging," by Michael Gardner.

The story reports on California's growing water dilemma, and notes that water problems are due not only to low rainfall, but to poor water management.

"Environmental groups blame the bureau for creating a crisis by stalling tough decisions to cut allocations to farms. The bureau 'delivered large amounts of water and drained the reservoirs,' said Tina Swanson, executive director of the Novato-based Bay Institute. 'The severe water problems are a combined result of dry conditions and mismanagement.'”

In the News: Threatened Status Urged for Longfin Smelt

The Bay Institute's Christina Swanson was quoted in this article from the Sacramento Bee on January 30. In the article, Christina stresses the importance of smart, sustainable water management in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. If we fail to manage our water resources properly, many fish species in the Delta face extinction. From the article:

"This is acknowledging that yet another species in the Delta is at risk of extinction, and it's going to help drive improvements in the way we're managing the ecosystem," said Tina Swanson, executive director of The Bay Institute. The state Fish and Game Commission must vote to list the longfin, probably at its March meeting. It imposed new Delta pumping limits to protect the fish during the review, which may now become permanent.
